After last week’s World Series ended, many fans (and I’m
sure some coaches) in Saint Louis thought, over and over, just how they could
have come “out on top” rather than losing to the Boston Red Sox. When the big
game is over, the losing team returns to the locker room and immediately begins
work on the next season, focusing on the mistakes and weaknesses of the past
season as areas in need of improvement. In sports, reviewing the games statistics
makes for a better team, because there is always another season.
But we have only one life. There is no instant replay. There
are no Monday morning quarterbacks. We don’t get a chance to review the statistics
in the locker room. There is only this life and what we do with it HERE and NOW
is the only thing that matters. “But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your
lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things.”
When the rich man asked for Lazarus to come and comfort him,
he was told, “And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf
fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those
from there pass to us.” The Church interprets this gulf to represent death.
Once dead, we cannot change our hearts. The time to get something done is NOW,
because when it’s over, it’s over.
